Quartz: An article on Hoefler's sale to Monotype in 2021
A famous type foundry's sale to a PE-backed giant has rattled the font industry is a well-written and superbly researched article by design journalist Anne Quito as a reaction to the sale of Hoefler's type foundry to Monotype in 2021. It pits Jonathan Hoefler and his wife Carleen Borsella (CEO of Hoefler), and the Monotype phalanx (type director Charles Nix, HGGC (the company that boought out Monotype in 2019) and Ninan Chako (an ex travel services manager but now the new CEO of Monotype)) against ex-Monotype employees such as Nadine Chahine, ex-Hoefler designers such as Tobias Frere Jones, and many unnamed Hoefler employees who will soon be jobless. A few quotes: Monotype has become the Wal-Mart of typography (Nadine Chahine), Monotype's sales-focused ethos will prove to be its downfall (Toshi Omagari), [Monotype is a] kraken eating up the industry (Nina Stössinger). |
