Boston Breton
Mac McGrew: Boston Breton was introduced by ATF about 1900. It was redrawn from the earlier Breton, originated by one of ATF's predecessors, the Boston Type Foundry, in the early or mid-1890s. It is a bold, rather wide square-serif face, suggestive of Stymie Bold which came thirty-some years later. But its large lowercase and short ascenders are suggestive also of the modifications designers have given such typefaces in phototype adaptations, seventy years or more later. Boston Breton Condensed and Extra Condensed came from the same source in 1909 or earlier. All have the same unusual sort of Q. In 2011, Nick Curtis created a digital version called Boston Breton NF. |
