Born and died in Nuremberg, Germany, 1471-1528. Painter, wood carver and copper engraver extraordinaire, famous for many great geometrical and structured capitals and proportioned designs, carried out with compass and ruler. Example from 1524. Another example, ca. 1500. Best known of the books on the geometry of letters is Dürer's Unterweysung der Messung [A Course on the Art of Measurement], published in 1525. See here. His famous set of German Renaissance Capitals (1525), Gothic Capitals, German Minuscule. Scan of his famous rhinoceros (1515) and of his Dürerfraktur (1519). Fonts derived from his geometric constructions of the roman capitals include P22 Durer Caps (2004, P22, Terry Wüdenbachs) and Hands on Albrecht (2005, MichelM, URW++). |
