Born in Detroit, 1938. A teacher of graphic design at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, he designed Out West on a 15 degree Ellipse in 1993. He published FellaParts (dingbats) and OutWest in 1993 at Emigre. He wrote Edward Fella: Letters on America, Photographs and Lettering. From the book's blurb: [This book] gives insight into his idiosyncratic world by combining and juxtaposing examples of his unique hand lettering with his photographs of found vernacular lettering. In 1997 he received the Chrysler Award, and in 1999 he got an Honorary Doctorate from CCS in Detroit. His work is in the National Design Museum and MOMA in New York.
