William Graily Hewitt
English calligrapher and illuminator, b. 1864, London. He started out as a lawyer, then as a writer, before turning to calligraphy. He was one of the first students of Edward Johnston at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London in 1900. Hewitt went on to teach classes at the School for over thirty years. Hewitt's works include The Pen and Type Design (1928), which was set in his own typeface, Treyford, and Lettering (1930). He died in 1952. |
