Ruari McLean

Scottish typographer and scholar, b. near Newton Stewart, Galloway, 1917, d. 2006. McLean was raised in Oxford and spent most of his life in London. He started as a designer for Penguin books on their Puffin Picture Books line. Author of Jan Tschichold: Typographer (1975). He also wrote the classic The Thames&Hudson Manual of Typography, originally published in 1980. His text True to Type: A Typographical Autobiography was published by Oak Knoll Press in the United States and Werner Shaw in the UK. Obituary.
