Omniglot jump page for Marathi. Devanagari descended from the Brahmi script sometime around the 11th century AD. It is used to write Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, and a number of smaller languages. Marathi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by about 50 million people mainly in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Devanagari is also used to write Awadhi, Bagheli, Balti, Bateri, Bhili, Bhojpuri, Bihari, Braj bhasha, Chhattisgarhi, Garhwali, Gondi, Harauti, Ho, Kachchi, Kanauji, Kankan, Kashmiri, Konkan, Limbu, Marwari, Newari, Santali, and Sherpa.
