Marshall Barton discusses various solid box fonts. On web pages, these can be used to provide continuous variable length background color and text boxes. Candidates are Terminal, MS LineDraw (imperfect, he says), and Labox (Apostrophic Labs, 2001), the only truly unrestricted free font in the bunch.
