Free fonts by the Information-technology Promotion Agency at this Japanese site: IPAGothic, IPAMincho, IPAPGothic, IPAPMincho, IPAUIGothic. These 2003 fonts all cover kanji, hiragana, katakana, as well as Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, and are Unicode compliant. A nice alternative for the proprietary MS Mincho and MS Gothic. See also here.
