ABOUT

Shotai

Japanese word for writing style. Of particular interest are the writing styles grouped under Edomoji, invented for advertising in the Edo period. These are uniquely Japanese. Examples include

  • Kanteiryu: used for publicity and programmes for arts like kabuki and rakugo. Invented by Okazaki Yakanroku, the name derives from Okazaki's nickname, kantei.
  • Yosemoji: Yose is Japanese comedy theatre such as rakugo and manzai. This style was used for posters.
  • Kagomoji or cage letters: thick and square.
  • Higemoji: letters with whiskers (hige), often used on sake barrels.
  • Sumo moji: thick black letters, initially used for sumo programmes and ads.
  • Chochin moji, or letters for hanging paper lanterns. Used in izakayas.
  • Kakuji, a rectangular style popular for making seals.
