Shields holds a BFA from Memphis State University and a MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He lived in Brooklyn where he co-founded the design studio Viewers Like You, and was a design consultant in New York. He designed Goofypop and Frank Rounded. Now an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin, Shields researches and catalogues wood type, and organizes the extensive Rob Roy Kelly wood type collection there. Speaker at ATypI 2009 in Mexico City, and at TypeCon 2012 in Milwaukee.
