Jean-Pierre Lacroux (1947-2002) had a wonderfully informative site with tons of useful links, many to French sources, and many concerned weith orthotypography. Subpages: Bibliography on pens, paper and writing. Bibliography on ancient and modern typography. Sadly, on November 12, 2002, Lacroux passed away. His pages remain on the web, a testimony to the many hearts he touched with his kindness. A tribute entitled Typographique tombeau de Jean-Pierre Lacroux (148 pages, 2003, PDF file) was published under the editorship of Thierry Bouche and Éric Angelini. Look for Lacroux's principle: the minimal typographic quality of a text is inversely proportional to its literary value. [Google] [More] ⦿
Typographic afficionado who contributes links to the St. Bride Printing Library in London. This page has links to the main type sites on the web. I can't resist this wonderful short autobiography of Jef, and I do not want to translate it, because it would lose its punch: "Jef Tombeur, ex-vagabond professionnel&auto-stoppeur en Europe, au Moyen-Orient et en Amérique du Nord depuis l'âge de 15 ans, s'est rapidement tourné vers le journalisme par désoeuvrement. Vendre à la criée The International Times et The Black Dwarf à Londres, puis Le Monde à Strasbourg, l'y incita. Unsure what this is. The International Type Index is a free project from a non-profit organisation. The objective is to build a searchable database of all fonts from all foundries, from all the world, to the benefit of both users AND authors. As a non-profit project, TypeIndex.org is 100% user-built : the font database grows through submission of missing foundries, fonts, and reviews. Well, there you have it. There is type news, a type handbook, downloads of free fonts, links to commercial fonts, and a type museum. [Google] [More] ⦿

A useful list of free fonts, but the surrounding text should be ignored: Most of the sites below are run by type designers or foundries, and they tend to offer a few dozen fonts at most. Why doesn't this page list the huge freeware websites? Take a quick look at those sites and you'll see that the fonts there are of variable quality, with not many that are good for professional design work. But even more important, many of the type designs are clearly copied from other people's work. To be fair, mixed in with the knockoffs are thousands of original fonts made by amateurs who just love type. But the lack of oversight-anyone can upload-and the confusing way that those sites mix the bad with the good, makes it hard for us to recommend them. (In the end, those sites need no help; a Google search quickly turns them up.) Below, legitimate free fonts offered by the people who created them. Huh? The silent implication is that non-foundry type is not legitimate? And that foundry type is. Cloning has been practiced by both communities with equal success, but only one of the two communities asks money for it, and only one tells the world that the other one is no good.
