ABOUT

Linotype Devanagari

This 5-style typeface family was published in 2019. Contributions:

  • The original 1977 Matthew Carter designs that were subsequently updated in 1983 for PostScript, under the art direction of Fiona Ross and Georgie Surman.
  • For the 2019 update, Monotype Studio was aided by Lisa Timpe and Gunnar Vilhjalmsson.
  • The 2019 fonts now contain all the Devanagari glyphs specified in Unicode for OpenType output.

Monotype's advertisement: Inspired by the late 19th and early 20th century Nirnaya Sagar designs, Linotype Devanagari is considered a traditional text face. Now available in five weights and suitable for a wide variety of print and digital uses, the design's open counters ensure high levels of legibility at small sizes and at modest resolution. A compact design, Linotype Devanagari also provides economy of space where textual real estate is at a premium. In addition, its large character set enables the setting of Hindi, Marathi, Nepali and is suitable for Sanskrit passages.
