Julius E.F. Gipkens
German industrial graphic designer, b. Emmerich, Hannover, 1883, d. New York, 1968. A disciple of poster artist Lucian Bernhard, he started his career in Berlin, and settled later in New York after he emigrated there in the 1930s. Typefaces by him at the Bauersche Giesserei include Femina (1913) and Majestic (1914). At the Wilhelm Woellmers Schriftgiesserei, Berlin, he designed Admiral and Admiral Halbfett in 1906. Revivals of Majestic include Chistoso (2019, Chuck Mountain). |
