Swiss graphic and type designer, b. Thayngen, Schaffhausen, 1937. She studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zurich. In 1968, Rosmarie Tissi and her mentor, Siegfried Odermatt, set up the studio Odermatt&Tissi in Zurich. Her typefaces were all published at Engler Text-Bild-Integration AG: Mindanao (1975), Sinaloa (1972, Letraset, Linotype), Sonora (1972). As of 2023, Lineto is the sole owner of Tissi's typefaces. They explain: Sinaloa was first distributed by Letraset from 1974 [onwards] as dry-transfer lettering sheets in three different sizes. Subsequently, Letraset and/or its legal successors created digital realisations of Sinaloa, which was done entirely without the involvement of Rosmarie Tissi. This ultimately led to the font being distributed for decades without compensation through royalties. In the autumn of 2020, Rosmarie Tissi obtained a retroactive compensation payment from Monotype, Letraset's legal successor, and demanded the removal of her typeface from all their distribution platforms. In 2023, Rosmarie Tissi approached Lineto to work closely with her to digitally remaster and expand her typefaces, and republish them exclusively. This is now taking place in th autumn of 2024; on the first of October 2024 we will launch LL Sinaloa and LL Sonora with an event at the AGI congress in Basel. A few weeks later, LL Mindanao will follow. Obsolete FontShop link. Klingspor link. Obsolete Linotype link. Postscript: Lineto states that Tissi's typefaces were illegally sold by both Fontshop and Linotype for many years until Lineto itself gained legal and exclusive rights to Tissi's work. |
