Despite contradictory claims by the European politicians like Jacque Santer, then president of the European Commission, the Euro symbol was first designed (in 1973 and 1974) by a German designer, Luxembourg-based euro-fanatic, Arthur Eisenmenger (b. 1914, Basel, Switzerland; d. 2002, Eislingen, Germany), who was the former chief graphic designer of the European Community until his retirement in 1974. He also designed the European Union flag. Eisenmenger claimed that it was in fact he who created the symbol a quarter of a century before its unveiling in 1997. The European commission claimed that it was chosen in December 1996 after an internal competition headed by Yves Thibault de Silguy. |
