De Passe&Menne
[Jean Baptist De Panne]
Dutch foundry from 1842-1856, bought by Nicolaas Tetterode in 1856. Formerly, De Passe&Cie in 1841. Jean Baptist De Panne (b. Brussels, ca. 1806, d. Amsterdam, 1844) was a Belgian who had been a foreman of Firmin Didot in Paris. Kornelis Elix, an Amsterdam based typefounder, asked him to come to Amsterdam, where De Passe worked for him from 1837 on. In 1841, De Passe created his own foundry, only to die in 1844, a year after his first specimen was published. That specimen derived mostly from the Th. Lejeune foundry in Brussels, which was active there from 1836-1838. Specimen in the Amsterdam University Library. |
