Lothian Type Foundry
[George Buxton Lothian]
Type foundry that operated in New York from 1829-1842, founded by the eccentric George Buxton Lothian (d. 1851), a perfectionist with an incurable temper, but also one of the finest type founders of his generation. Before 1829, he had worked with John Watts (the first stereotyper of the United States), with Collins and Hanna, in his own foundry in Pittsburgh with the help of Peter C. Cortelyou (1819-1820), with the David and George Bruce Type Foundry, and again in his own foundry, Lothar&Pell (which existed from 1822-1823, with investor Alfred Pell). The equipment of the plant was bought by Peter Cortelyou in 1850. |
