ABOUT

Japanese brush calligraphy

Japanese brush calligraphy (shodo) comes in various styles:

  • tensho: the style of seals.
  • reisho: scribe's style.
  • kaisho (square or block style): write one stroke after another. Time-consuming, and not often used.
  • gyosho: semi-cursive style, a bit less legible than kaisho, but more fluent.
  • sosho: cursive style, even less legible, but often used.
Materials used include the suzuri (heavy metal ink pot), the fude (brush), the hanshi (thin calligraphy paper), the sumi (solid black goo that must be mixed with water in the suzuri to get black ink), the bunchin (metal stick to keep the paper flat during writing), and the shitajiki (soft black mat).
