Saint Mesrob Mashtots
Armenian cleric (361-440) who devised the 38-character Armenian alphabet in 405 AD. It is a phonetic alphabet that was adopted in 406 AD by an edict of the Armenian King. Mashtots used various scripts as models, including Greek, Syriac, and Aramaic. Most letters have remained unchanged since then. |
