Lambe-lambe
Lambe-lambe (translated: 'lick-lick') is a vernacular printing tradition once popular for promoting theatre and spectacles in Brazil. Lick lick alludes to how the posters are affixed to walls. Poster hangers use large brushes to paint glue on the front of the poster. The glue penetrates the thin paper and sticks the poster to the walls. Long in decline, the city of Sáo Paulo still boasts a working lambe-lambe printshop, Grafica Fidalga, where one can find a rich history of hand-generated letterforms carved as wooden blocks used to print vibrant poster series. The lambe-lambe tradition is reviewed at ATypI 2009 in Mexico City by Catherine Dixon and Henrique Nardi. Christy Wickoff's Lambe-Lambe pages with pictures. Rahma Projekt (Criciuma, Brazil) created some lambe-lambe simulation posters in 2014. |
