Monotype: Ads in the wrong places
Typophiles in 2009 object to Monotype's choices of venues for ads. One included a font piracy site. It is much more common though to find them at legit free font archives, where all fonts are truly "free". There two systems are used, the ordinary ad, and the hooking method---what first looks like a download link is in fact a redirect to the fonts.com site, where one has to pay. This practice is wrong because both the web site owners (through fees from ads and clicks and/or contracts) and Monotype profit from the work of type designers who have opted not to charge for fonts, most often under a license which states free for non-commercial use. I know that large companies have no conscience, and the bottom line is the only thing that counts. Can't we ever get out of this way of thinking? |
