Ksenya Samarskaya (b. Saint Petersburg, Russia) studied at the University of Oregon and New York University (class of 2010). From 2007 until 2011, she worked for Hoefler&Frere-Jones in New York. After a brief stint as type consultant for Apple in Cupertino, CA (2012-2013), she set up her own design studio, Samarskaya & Partners, in 2015, in Brooklyn, NY. That same year, she co-founded Alphabettes. Samarskaya has taught typography and design at Harbour.Space University in Barcelona, University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and the School of Visual Arts in New York. She splits her time between Brooklyn, NY, and Lisbon, Portugal. The typefaces she worked on at Hoefler include Exchange, Ideal Sans, Landmark, Retina, Sentinel, Sterling, Verlag, Archer, Forza, Gotham, Historical Allsorts, Numbers, Shades, Tungsten, Vitesse and Whitney. Her contributions covered design direction, drawing, kerning, interpolation, opentype features, hinting, production, testing and troubleshooting. Ksenya created the decorative layered display typeface Blesk (2015). In 2019, at Rosetta Type, she published the rugged informal typeface Corsair Latin. |
