ABOUT

Henri Didot

Born in Paris in 1765, he died there in 1862. He was the son of Pierre-François Didot (1731-1793), who in turn was the youngest son of the Didot printing business founder, François Didot. Henri is remembered for his microscopic types. For producing type he invented the Polymatype, which consisted of a long bar of matrices into which hot metal was poured. Over a hundred letters could be founded at once. Henri Didot engraved the assignats---the paper money used during the French Revolution.
