ABOUT

Pieter Das

Dutch illustrator and lettering artist who set up shop in Germany in 1910. He left Germany in 1914 to return to Soest, The Netherlands. Greatly influenced by the expressionist style of Lucian Bernhard and typefaces like Berthold Block (1908), Das became successful using this new style. As early as 1917, he used commercial lettering that was imitated by Amsterdam Type Foundry's 1920 typeface, Das Antieke. In 1928, that foundry finally published an extended version of Das Antieke, Succes, under the supervision of Sjoerd Hendrik de Roos.
