Never mind "once in a while" - support the artist every time!
There is no justification whatsoever for using a font for gain without
paying for it.
Equally, there is no justification for making someone pay for
something unless they have a use for it.
Most of the fonts available over Usenet/Internet are broken or
damaged, for some reason or other.
There are some who abhor this situation.
I'm not one of them.
My view is simple enough:
Broken or damaged fonts are good enough for the fanatic, who collects
them purely for their look, the feel, the magic, the je ne sais quoi
(I'm not a fanatic, I'm a loonie)
Broken or damaged fonts are good enough for the potential user, who
can play about with them to his/her heart's content.
No-one in their right mind would use an unlicensed font in a
commercial project. That's stealing food from the mouths of the
author's bairns. It's no right.
Whether the author is under contract to Adobe, IG Farben, or simply
does it for his/her own pleasure. If you make a butty out of it, so
must they.
I don't, as a rule, buy fonts. If a customer wants something, I design
it mysef. If they want something else, that someone else has designed,
I check that they have licensed what they want me to use.
Sorry for the lecture, anyone who finds it at odds with his/her own
philosophy can add me to their killfile.
