German type designer (b. Achim, 1880, d. Darmstadt, 1954), brother of the more famous "Kleukens", Friedrich Wilhelm (1878-1956). In 1907, the two brothers started running the Ernst-Ludwig-Presse, the private printing shop of the duke Ernst Ludwig von Hessen. Burte-Fraktur by C.H. Kleukens was cut in 1928 for Mainzer Presse by Gustav Eichenauer, Rudolf Koch's favourite punchcutter. It was revived in 2003 by Manfred Klein. He also added a handwritten freestyle version, Burtine 2003, and another interpretation, Burtinomatic (2004). Judith Type (1923), a hookish hellish German expressionist typeface, was at the basis of Judith Type (2007, Nick Curtis), Holofernes NF (2007, Nick Curtis) and Irrlicht (2015, Ari Hausel, Aarhaus). |
