A quote in August 2024 from a correspondent on the state of affairs in font design: [...] It's part of a general project I'm now working on to create (better) free versions of existing typefaces. I'm a little surprised nobody else is doing nice open-source versions of useful typefaces, so I guess I have to do it myself. The font "community" seems to be headed more and more towards an unhealthily proprietary place, with only occasional overtures towards free fonts (mostly ugly) made by Google and the like. Everyone else seems to be more and more obsessed with piracy---and most everything is Monotype now. And everyone seems to be mostly interested in creating display faces and other weird nonsense.
