Simon Manchipp
In reaction to a discussion in January 1999 on comp.fonts, the Head of Graphics at HHCL+P in London posted a lovely message on that newsgroup excerpted here: "I feel you should also be made aware of people such as F.A.S.T. (Federation against software theft)... I would look a little closer at WHY they choose not to pursue you, the crumbs from the giants table. Perhaps because you are simply not worth it. ... So you know a typedesign takes talent. So shouldn't that talent be rewarded? ... you are likely to remain small-fry, out of their (chosen) reach." Mr. Manchipp thus accused one poster of software theft (how he came to that conclusion, only God knows), showed muscle to keep other posters at bay, used erroneous arguments (should every talented person be protected by law to get his/her rewards? It surely would make mathematicians and prostitutes very happy), and added personal insults directed at a person he does not know (nobody in this world is small-fry, but when you are standing on the corporate ladder, you need binoculars to see the people far below). Update in February: in a courageous gesture, Manchipp apologized to the person in question. |
