| Arne Götje, a German who lives in Taiwan, works on a project to provide CJK unicode fonts. His work is based on the Arphic fonts AR PL ShanHeiSun Uni and AR PL ZenKai Uni. He added the Chinese dialect phonetic symbols. Furthermore, he merged the embedded Firefly Sung bitmap font into CJKUnifonts. In 2005, the work of the Hong Kong freefonts project (OAKA group) was also merged into CJK Unifonts. Additional URL. Free high quality Chinese truetype Unicode fonts under the Arphic license (Arphic is based in Taiwan). They contain almost 22000 characters (!!!) and contain glyphs for Big 5 Chinese, GB2312-80 Chinese, ISO8859-1,2,3,4,7,9,10,13,14,15 and Bopomofo extended for Minnan and Hakka (Taiwan). People involved include Tsong-Min Wu and Tsong-Huey Wu. As of 2005, the fonts are cwTeXFangSong, cwTeXHeiBold, cwTeXKai, cwTeXMing, cwTeXYen. All fonts cover Chinese, Korean and Latin as well. Jeff Wu is the General Manager of Arphic Technology. He has led Arphic R&D Division for more than 20 years. His specialties are development of font technology and products. Also, he is familiar with font design and application in versatile devices. He worked as a Software Engineer and Manager of Software department in Mitac Internationl Corp. before Arphic. He received his B.S and M.S degrees in computer science from National Chiao-Tung University of Taiwan. Speaker at ATypI 2018 in Antwerp on Chinese font design: There are about twenty-eight thousand Chinese characters that need to be designed. The average number of strokes in a Chinese character is 12. In Arphic JingXi Hei, for example, the average number of control points for each stroke is about 100. Therefore, there are about 33,600,000 control points to deal with when developing a Chinese typeface. When creating a Variable Font, the control points of every pole of every axis need to correspond, so it is a huge work to design, test the transfer to a Variable Font, and fix the design and control points. The 42 fonts are designed for small devices, and thus, the glyphs are monolinear and simple. Each font weight in the family has a total of 65,535 glyphs (the maximum number of characters supported in the OpenType format), and the entire family contains just under half a million total glyphs. Adobe sought expertise from foundries such as Iwata Corp to expand the Japanese glyph selection, Sandoll Communication, designer of Korean Hangul and Changzhou SinoType, Adobe's longtime collaborator in China. On the Google side of the project, where the fonts are added to the Noto Sans and Noto Serif (which covers all major languages of the world and many others, including European, African, Middle Eastern, Indic, South and Southeast Asian, Central Asian, American, and East Asian languages, and, since the joint release with Adobe in 2014, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, and minority languages related to them), users can download all Noto fonts freely in a 43 MB file. Source Han Serif is the serif-style typeface family companion to Source Han Sans. This free superfamily covers Chinese (traditional (both Taiwan and Hong Kong) and simplified), Japanese, Korean, Greek, Cyrillic and Latin. This project, based on designs originally due to Ryoko Nishizuka, a senior Adobe designer in Tokyo, started in 2010.
