Adobe: OpenType-SVG Color Fonts

Adobe: OpenType-SVG is a font format in which an OpenType font has all or just some of its glyphs represented as SVG (scalable vector graphics) artwork. This allows the display of multiple colors and gradients in a single glyph. Because of these features, we also refer to OpenType-SVG fonts as color fonts. OpenType-SVG fonts allow text to be shown with these graphic qualities, while still allowing it to be edited, indexed, or searched. They may also contain OpenType features that allow glyph substitution or alternate glyph styles. Color fonts like Trajan Color Concept and EmojiOne Color will appear just like typical fonts in your programs' font menus but they may not display their full potential, since many programs don't yet have full support for the color components. If your software program doesn't support the SVG artwork within the fonts, glyphs will fall back to a solid black style. Color can still be applied to this fallback style, as it will work like a typical OpenType font. [Google] [More]  ⦿

Alex Trochut

Brooklyn, NY-based grandson of Joan Trochut of Super-Veloz fame, b. 1981, Barcelona. After completing his studies at Elisava Escola Superior de Disseny in Barcelona, Alex established his own design studio in Barcelona before relocating to New York City.

He is the codesigner with Andreu Balius of SuperVeloz (2005, TypeRepublic), a digital version of his grandfather's typeface. It won an award at the TDC2 2005 type competition. Balius says about this typeface originally created by Joan Trochut from 1920-1980: Super-Veloz could be considered as an Ornamental type design, but in its core it is an experimental typeface based on a set of modular features that, with the combining of its modules, a great range of typefaces, ornaments ---even illustrations---, could be made. That is perhaps the most interesting experiment in early modern type design ever made in Spain during the immediate years after the War. The lecture, considering the borders between type design and ornament design, will introduce the context where Joan Trochut's Super-Veloz was produced (from sketches to published brochures and speciments) in 1942. Also will explain how Super-Veloz works. It is really a "type-ornament" design that could be considered on the edge of what we call type design.

Alex has created design, illustration and typography for a diverse range of clients: Nike, Adidas, The Rolling Stones, Katy Perry, BBC, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, The Guardian, The New York Times and Time Magazine. Alex Trochut's lettering must be seen to be believed---it has to be genetic transmission. Recurring themes include adorned initials and modular types. His numerical all-caps alphabet for British Airways is phenomenal and pushes the bling-bling to the fashionable extreme. Stunning dollar sign drawn by him in 2007 for Acido Surtido.

In 2009, he published Neo Deco at HypeForType. Noteworthy type treatments of that year include Nixon and the Futurecraft logo.

In 2012, he designed Trojan Font (like Trajan). He also did some stunning multiline alphabet for V Magazine. Also noteworthy is a swashy calligraphic logo for Wiz Khalifa and Atlantic Records.

In 2013, Barcelona-based creative agency, Herraiz Soto commissioned Alex Trochut to create an original typeface collection titled Raw for Notegraphy.

In 2017, he made the color font Megazero at Fontself in Opentype SVG format.

Bakoma TEX

This extensive package designed by Basil K. Malyshev for Microsoft Windows XP/2000/NT/98/95 contains a wealth of fonts and software. We quote the author: "BaKoMa TeX is Postscript enabled TeX system intended for Electronic Publishing. Postscript enabled means that the system includes built-in Postscript interpreter that provides careful drawing Postscript graphics (including one embedded into DVI via TeX special's) on display and on (even non-postscript) printers. Also, it provides perfect conversion of any Postscript graphics for such output formats as: PDF, SVG, and HTML. SVG output lets you to create high quality animated presentations. The system supports using a scalable fonts in modern font formats: OpenType, TrueType (Unicode supported), Postscript Type1 (including Multiple Masters), and Type3." The 1500 fonts included are broken down as follows (nearly all are conversions of metafonts):

  • CM (including LaTeX and Logo fonts + vf for T1 with CX)
  • AMS Fonts (Euler, Math Symbols).
  • EC/TC.
  • LH (T2A).
  • Concrete (Math, ECC).
  • Malvern.
  • CMCyr + vf for T2A/LCY.

Batik SVG Toolkit

The Batik SVG Toolkit is a Java-based toolkit for applications or applets that want to use images in the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) format for various purposes, such as display, generation or manipulation. The project's ambition is to give developers a set of core modules that can be used together or individually to support specific SVG solutions. Examples of modules are the SVG Parser, the SVG Generator and the SVG DOM. It includes an SVG Font Converter, called TrueType Font to SVG (ttf2svg): The TrueType Font converter application helps to embed font definitions in SVG files. Typically, one can just include a minimal subset of needed characters. [Google] [More]  ⦿

Bezier curve

A Bézier curve is a parametric curve frequently used in computer graphics and related fields such as type design. Bézier curves are used to model smooth curves that can be scaled indefinitely. The mathematical basis for Bézier curves is the Bernstein polynomial (1912), but its applicability to graphics was understood half a century later. Bézier curves were widely publicized in 1962 by the French engineer Pierre Bézier who used them to design automobile bodies at Renault. The study of these curves was first developed in 1959 by mathematician Paul de Casteljau using de Casteljau's algorithm, a numerically stable method to evaluate Bézier curves, at Citroën, another French automaker.

TrueType fonts use Bézier splines composed of quadratic Bézier curves. Type 1 or PostScript fonts use cubic Bézier curves. Imaging systems like PostScript, Metafont, and SVG use Bézier splines composed of cubic Bézier curves for drawing curved shapes. OpenType fonts can use either kind, depending on the flavor of the font. [Google] [More]  ⦿

Bill Davis

Bill Davis graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a Printing Management degree. He was Vice President for Marketing at Agfa Monotype in 2003, and quit around early 2004. In 2004, he co-founded Ascender Corporation, where he was VP Business Development. Wnen Ascender was bought by Monotype, Bill made the jump to Monotype.

At ATypI 2003 in Vancouver, his talk was entitled Steal this font: Fonts are at risk now more than ever before compared to traditional forms of software piracy. Type designers may not understand all the new software applications and technologies that allow End Users to distribute fonts with their documents on the Internet. What can type designers and font vendors do to address the threats and opportunities of these new technologies? This presentation will review the role of the EULA (End User License Agreement) and a variety of software applications and formats such as PDF, Flash and SVG. This abstract is subversive, starting with the innocent-sounding phrase "software piracy", as if fonts are software---they are not: they are just tables of data representing geometric forms. When I vectorize a Picasso painting, the data are not a program! This misreprentation is typical of Agfa and now Monotype. On various Agfa web sites (some of which pretended to be something else), the word "download" was used to invite friendly clickers, only to discover that in Agfa speak, "download" means "buy". It is ironic, then, that this deceptive marketing company joined forces in 2003 with the heavy-handed FAST (Federation Against Software Theft), as if "theft" is bad and "misleading" is not. On Typographica, Bill Davis says: We have worked for some time now to get FAST to recognize fonts in their software compliance programs. Fonts are software too. Almost every message of his pumps out this fiction, since, clearly, if fonts are not software, then there is no software copyright protection. On his web site, he is proud to be a policeman: Bill led the company's efforts to develop custom software to track unauthorized use of its trademarks and copyrights on the Internet, and to evolve their font software licenses to target the needs of e-books, web servers and other applications.

Cufon
[Simo Kinnunen]

Free software published in 2009 to render text in a font of one's choice. Developed by Simo Kinnunen. From the announcement:

Cufon aims to become a worthy alternative to sIFR, which despite its merits still remains painfully tricky to set up and use. To achieve this ambitious goal the following requirements were set:

  • No plug-ins required - it can only use features natively supported by the client
  • Compatibility - it has to work on every major browser on the market
  • Ease of use - no or near-zero configuration needed for standard use cases
  • Speed - it has to be fast, even for sufficiently large amounts of text

Cufon consists of a font generator, which converts fonts to a proprietary format and a rendering engine written in JavaScript. In reality the generator is little more than a web-based interface to FontForge. First, the generator builds a custom FontForge script based on user input and then runs it, saving the result as an SVG font. The SVG font is then parsed and SVG paths are converted to VML paths. This is a crucial step in achieving stellar performance in Internet Explorer, as it supports VML natively. The resulting document is then converted into JSON with a mix of functional JavaScript. This has numerous advantages:

  • To include a font, you only need to load it with the standard tag as any other JavaScript file and it will be registered automatically
  • There is no need to manually parse the file on client-side again
  • External JavaScript files block execution until they have loaded, which helps us to achieve a flicker-free, clean replacement
  • It compresses extremely well. While often somewhat large in terms of file size without any compression, a compressed font usually weighs in 60-80% less than the original.
Tutorial by Jeffrey Way, who argues that Cufon beats sIFR in simplicity and ease of use, but warns that text is not selectable and that the hover element does not work. Alternate URL. [Google] [More]  ⦿

Font formats

A summary of digital font formats, as of 2012:

  • Truetype, or TTF. TTC or TrueType Collection is often used for oriental languages.
  • Opentype, orOTF. These come in two classes, one based on Truetype (and virtually identical to TTF), and CFF (or type 1)-flavored versions.
  • Type 1, T1, or PostScript. This is Adobe's patented format from the early eighties. It includes a subclass of fonts called multiple masters.
  • Work file formats. These are typecially text-editable formats undestood only by font generation programs. For example, FontLab has VFB, FontForge has SFD, Ikarus has its own format, RoboFont has UFO, and so forth.
  • Scaleable Vector Graphics, or SVG.
  • MetaFont by Don Knuth.
  • Older bitmap font formats such as FON.
  • Web only font formats such as EOT (Embedded OpenType, by Microsoft), and WOFF.

Fonttools
[Behdad Esfahbod]

The fontTools project was started by Just van Rossum in 1999, and was maintained as an open source project at Sourceforge. In 2008, Paul Wise (pabs3) began helping Just with stability maintenance. In 2013 Behdad Esfahbod began a friendly fork, thoroughly reviewing the codebase and making changes at Github to add new features and support for new font formats.

fontTools is a library for manipulating fonts, written in Python. The project includes the TTX tool, that can convert TrueType and OpenType fonts to and from an XML text format, which is also called TTX. It supports TrueType, OpenType, AFM and to an extent Type 1 and some Mac-specific formats. The project has a BSD-style open-source licence. Among other things this means you can use it free of charge. Once installed you can use the ttx command to convert binary font files (.otf, .ttf, etc) to the TTX xml format, edit them, and convert them back to binary format. TTX files have a .ttx file extension. The following tables are currently supported: BASE, CBDT, CBLC, CFF, COLR, CPAL, DSIG, EBDT, EBLC, FFTM, GDEF, GMAP, GPKG, GPOS, GSUB, JSTF, LTSH, MATH, META, OS/2, SING, SVG, TSI0, TSI1, TSI2, TSI3, TSI5, TSIB, TSID, TSIJ, TSIP, TSIS, TSIV, VDMX, VORG, avar, cmap, cvt, feat, fpgm, fvar, gasp, glyf, gvar, hdmx, head, hhea, hmtx, kern, loca, ltag, maxp, meta, name, post, prep, sbix, trak, vhea and vmtx. Jonathan Snook: Web Type Talk, 2010

From March 10-15, a conference was held at Las Vegas in which Jonathan Snook explained the web type situation. A summary by Luke Wroblewski:

  • The FONT tag allowed you to specify any font someone had on their system for a block of HTML text but it required separate tags for each instance.
  • Images allow you to use any font you want on a Web page rendered as an image. But this approach has maintenance and performance issues (due to many images) and issues. Only practical for limited items with short text.
  • When you use images for text, printed pages look pixelated and you can't select text in images to copy it.
  • CSS Font Stacks: allow you to set a series of fonts in CSS styles. The end user's machine will make use of the first font in the stack that is available.
  • Sifr, Cufon, and Typeface are all font replacement techniques
  • Sifr: needs Javascript&Flash installed. Uses standard HTML markup and replaces it with Flash movies that render the text in specific fonts. It is slow for many elements and as a result, only used in headers.
  • Cufon: generates SVG and VML outlines for font. Draws to the CANVAS tag in all browsers that support it. No text selection is available as the real text is made invisible. Supports some CSS styling (more than Sifr).
  • Typeface.js: uses CANVAS and VML. Includes letter-spacing and font-stretch.
  • @fontface is a CSS specification that allows you to use unique fonts on the Web: can style with full extent of CSS; supports text selection; works on mobile platforms; and has good print quality.
  • TrueType and OpenType are the most common font formats on people's machines. Work on Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari.
  • Emmbeddable Opentype (EOT) was developed by Microsoft to support font foundry concerns. Supported in IE 4+
  • SVG Fonts -supported by Chrome and iPhone OS3.1+ FontForge allows you export to SVG fonts
  • Web Open Font Format (WOFF) in Firefox 3.6 Supported by major font foundries.
  • Font Squirrel allows you to upload a font in TrueType and OpenType and it will output EOT, SVG, and WOFF formatted fonts. Also provides sample HTML and CSS for font usage. Recently supports Cufon for fallback in older browsers
  • Performance issues with @font-face? Font files can be quite big (megabytes) which impacts download speeds. Subsetting reduces the number of glyphs in a font so file size is lower. EOT and WOFF have built in compression support
  • Firefox and Opera show unstlyed text until the page is loaded. Safari and Chrome show no text until the font is downloaded (which can take a while).
  • Biggest issue is still Licensing. Most fonts, even some free fonts, don't allow @font-face embedding. Foundries that support WOFF haven't provided updated licenses
  • Font embedding services: TypeKit, Typotheque, FontDeck -act as content delivery network for fonts. Fonts sit on their site. If their server goes down- what is the fallback on font timeout? Some services require Javascript, none serve SVG fonts, Services obfuscate fonts so they can't be downloaded by others and therefore do not support caching.
  • Kernest and FontSpring offer the option to host fonts yourself. 90% of the fonts in Kernest are openly licensed - OFL, MIT, GNU, etc. So licensing is much less of a worry if you host them yourself.

Unfortunately it isn't that practical to use, a JS script has to go through and replace all of the text on the page with inline SVGs every time the page reflows. [Google] [More]  ⦿

Microsoft's overlapped glyphs

Microsoft's solution for color fonts involves the creation of COLR/CPAL tables in Opentype fonts. Already implemented in 2014, each glyph has one or more accompanying color glyphs, and when they are overlapped they create the final colored glyph. Not as versatile as PNG images or SVG tables, Microsoft was the fastest out of the gate though---they already released their own implementation in Windows 8.1, and Mozilla is working on supporting this in Firefox. Mozilla and Adobe's SVG

Mozilla and Adobe joined forces when they proposed SVG tables for use in multicolor fonts. Bezier-based glyphs are thus replaced by SVG images. The SVG graphics language is quite powerful (almost like PostScript), and the images can be scaled for clean output. This format is supoorted in Firefox version 26 and higher, and is a persnal favorite of mine among the choices. However, one could also have achieved this by PostScript or by encoding the old Type 3 font format, and I am wondering if font design is not making a full circle back to something equivalent tp type 3. Opentype SVG

Opentype SVG is a font format in which an OpenType font has all or just some of its glyphs represented as SVG (scalable vector graphics) artwork. This allows the display of multiple colors and gradients in a single glyph. Because of these features, type designers refer to OpenType-SVG fonts as color fonts. OpenType-SVG fonts allow text to be shown with these graphic qualities, while still allowing it to be edited, indexed, or searched. They may also contain OpenType features that allow glyph substitution or alternate glyph styles. Color fonts like Trajan Color Concept (Adobe) and EmojiOne Color (Adobe) appear just like typical fonts but the challenge is to bring out their full potential by widening the number of aplications and browsers that support them. Optional Is

Reykjavik, Iceland-based design and software company. At CERN Hackday in 2013, they designed the free monospaced computer programming font Meyrin or Meyrin CERN terminal): First you need to create an SVG file for each glyph. There is a template.svg which can be used to create new glyphs. There is a descender of two units and ascender of 3 units. This is used for diacritics. Once each glyph is an individual SVG file, you can import them into a font creation tool. We used the online service http://icomoon.io From this we upload and map each SVG file to a specific unicode code point. We did some final tweaks in font forge to get the space character and additional metadata. We completed all the characters which are available on the IBM System 6000 keyboard. We ran a simple script to output all available characters, took screenshots and tried to create these as well. This is not a complete Unicode font, but you are welcome to fork the repo and create additional glyphs as needed. Open Font Library link. [Google] [More]  ⦿

Pixel Ambacht
[Roel Nieskens]

Dutch site mainly concerned with font technology. Interesting sub-pages:

  • An article on multicolor fonts.
  • An article on multicolor icons.
  • An article on an 8-bit multicolor font, Compyx, developed by the writer, and freely available for download. It hearkens back to the original pixel fonts that hackers used to love---Compyx is the name of a famous Commodore 64 graphician. It is a three-color font created in a scalable manner by a very clever hack: We have four SVG files per character, each file representing one color. We're going to use Fontlab's TransType 4 to create the multicolor font, but TransType can't work with a bunch of SVGs. It takes regular singlecolor fonts, and allows us to overlay and color them, and export them as a multicolor font. So, first we need to create four regular fonts, each one containing all the characters belonging to the same color layer. Since I don't need control over typographic details like kerning or hinting---Compyx is a lot simpler in design than a proper typeface like Helvetica---I simply used trusty old Icomoon. We import all characters belonging to the same color layer, and turn those into a regular TTF. You'll end up with four files: font-color1.ttf, font-color2.ttf, font-color3.ttf and font-color4.ttf. We can then fire up TransType 4 and import all four fonts. TransType allows you to overlay these fonts and give each layer a color, creating basic multicolor fonts. We do this with the method "Overlay fonts", which allows us to determine the order and color of each layer. When everything looks good, we export the combined font with the Opentype TT settings. You'll end up with font files for three of the four proposed formats. We now have true multicolor fonts! Now, for the last step we take the rather big TTF font (628Kb in the case of the Compyx font) and crunch it to a more reasonable 104Kb WOFF file. I used the sfnt2woff tool for this.

You write the description of a typeface, design the outlines of a glyph, track the development history and publish any revision in human-readable format to store locally. All it takes to run it is a browser supporting a few open standards. [...] I believe it is of uttermost importance that everyone has the unrestricted access to the tools one needs to create freely. Therefore everyone can come here and may do good and that is why typism uses SVG. All the code and fonts are released under MIT License and Open Font License, respectively. [...] In other words, typism borrows heavily from Blender, Firefox, Wikipedia and The Pirate Bay.
