Ananda Das on type 3

Ananda Das tells the type 3 story: Type 3 is an almost-obsolete format once very popular because it was the only way for non-Adobe folks to produce PostScript fonts in the old days. The font technology was generally considered inferior because it did not allow hinting to make the fonts reproduce well on 300-dpi laser printers, although they generally were fine on filmsetters. Adobe kept the proprietary secret of how to make Type 1 fonts to themselves, so that they could sell the best-looking fonts. This, together with Adobe's then-high royalties for PostScript itself, annoyed Apple and Microsoft, so they developed TrueType as an alternative to PostScript. Learning of this development, Adobe's John Warnock publicly released the Type 1 spec so that anyone could make such a font. Thereafter, almost no Type 3 fonts were ever made. But Type 3 fonts did have some capabilities of their own, not shared with Type 1 fonts. They allowed shading and textures, as well as "random" substitution of particular glyphs, as Alan rightly pointed out. If you want to see some Type 3 fonts, they are probably still widely available at FTP freeware/shareware sites, usually under "PostScript" headings, sometimes under "PostScript Type 3". Ted Staunton

Born in Lincoln, UK, in 1942, Ted Staunton now lives near Vancouver, and designs type. After serving a five-year apprenticeship as a hand compositor (1958-1963) with the Lincolnshire Publishing Co., he spent three years (1963-1966) at Leicester College of Art&Design, graduating in type design. After spending some time in London working for Penguin, Hamlyn and other book publishing houses, he emigrated to Canada in 1970, working for Mitchell Press and Hemlock Printers in Vancouver before opening his own design business and letterpress printing shop, Sherwood Graphics, in 1984. In 1991 he published a private press book, The Lincolnshire Poacher, illustrated with his own wood-engravings. He is lives in Surrey, BC. Some of his fonts were used privately on transfer lettering sheets and cast in metal for hand typesetting at his private press, Sherwood Letterpress. At P22, he designed the semi-gothic font P22 Tyndale (2002) and Tyndale Extras (2002). Mono Hor (2011) is a horizontally striped version of it, Mono Ver (2011) a vertically striped version, and Mono Bold (2011) a bold version. Promo (2011) is purely geometric. Semiz (2011) and Semiz Light (experimental) are partly art deco. Audio (2011) is based on the logo of audiojelly. Arro (2011) has letters with arrowed terminals. Hexa (2011) is hexagonal. Happi (2011) is a fat finger face. Semiz Black (2011) is a free fat pixel face.
